This deeply upsets me...

Wow,

Another submission doesn't get the recognition it deserves, should I be surprised?
This was really well done, why you didn't get at least 5'th is beyond me.

The animation was very solid, & voice acting was acceptable.
The story was cool, although a little ambiguous, and unfinished.

There were a couple of issues though, the drawings were inconsistent in terms of
their proportions, for instance one second a character seemed tall, and the next he seemed to shirk a bit.

Although you had a replay button I feel you should have added a custom one instead of just making your film go to the beginning preloader.

Anyway it was a really cool halloween submission,
and although you did not win an award, I feel you should be proud of your work.

Thanks,
- Celx

PBass responds:

Well, I think the reason that that happened is because I submitted later in the day, when a lot of people were logged off. By the time the day was over, only a handful of votes were in and I missed out on dailies, ah well. You win some you lose some! I'll just have to try harder next time! :P

Thank you! Yes, the understanding of the story is very dependent on knowledge of the SCP website. I tried to kind of leave a curious feeling with the audience, so that they might check out the website to learn more. But instead I think I confused people as many of them think I got it from Dr. Who, lol.

Yeah, looking back I notice my characters keep changing height slightly. One of them keeps getting heavier and skinnier too. I'll have to check my proportions much better my next animation.

The lack of a replay button is simply because I ran out of time and because I completely fail at any form of actionscript. I break everything when I use it, haha.
Right now I'm working on creating a menu, subtitles, easter eggs, and a replay button. Most of the time I just stare confused at an AS tutorial.

Thanks Celx! Even if I don't grab a prize, it was great experience! Thanks a million for your review and encouragement!

Good but short...

Hello,

I can't complain too much,
improve the length, or add extra skits.

A menu with features would be nice,
but compared to the other crap on newgrounds this was pretty solid,
especially considering it was your first film.

Anyway good luck in the future,
Thanks,
- Celx

Trottimus responds:

Thanks mate, yea I shall have a longer piece next time for sure.

And I'll figure out how to do a menu system too while I'm at it :)

Goddamn Rat...

What an odd film,
I remember watching "An American Tale" when I was younger and think what a cool adult oriented kids film. I also remember watching "Judge Dredd" and thinking they ruined the comic.

Anyway this us what I feel is positive about your film:
- You animation what alright.
- The drawings were good.
- The voices were decent.
- And it was pretty funny, even though he's not actually illegal, he's a refugee.

On the negative side:
- No menu, or extras.
- pretty short.

I gave you a 5/5 cause I have a soft spot for both of these characters,
thought it really should have been a 3/5.

Anyway it's nice to know I'm not the only one that remembers these films, just stay away from the shitty sequel to "An American Tale".

Thanks,
- Celx

Wonchop responds:

He didn't provide a valid passport on request.

Very cool...

Alright let me start off with the positive:

- Excellent animation.
- Very cool drawings.
- Small but unique menu.
- Decent sound.
- Perfect timing.

The only thing that would have made this better would have been a story,
and possibly voice actors.

Still this is one of the best pieces of ultraviolence I've seen on newgrounds in a long time, although it just seemed kind of souless. By the way what was the running time, and FPS?

Sincerely,
- Celx

XtremelyVenomous responds:

believe me if i told u the frame rate, u'd probable laugh. but thanks tho.

Needs serious improvement...

First off let me start with the positive aspects of your film:

- The background was really well done to a point I could call it professional.
- The editing of the film was very stylish, and well executed.
- Decent sound, I know sound is hard to do for films so I'm going to give you an extra point for that reason.

I do however have a plethora of issues with the film:

- The animation was really bad, I don't know what FPS you were using but it should have been 24, and it also seemed really choppy. You also used way too many tweens.

- The character design wasn't good, I mean the characters seemed out of proportion, & I don't feel they suited your film. But that may just be your style so I'll let it slide.

- No replay button, this is a serious no no in my books,
since it only takes a couple of minutes to do.

It's hard for me to wrap my head around how this took you two months to do,
even if it's your first submission it really shouldn't have taken that long!

I can see you really did try not to submit something crappy to the portal so I'm going to be kind and give you a 5, although I really think you deserve a 4.

You have potential, you just need to brush up your skills.
Sincerely,
- Celx

CoffeeBean responds:

Thanks for the review.

Yeah, two months IS ridiculous. First, I don't have Flash at home (nor the money to buy it); the school does. Second, the amount of time I had to do it during school was 50 minutes per class (yeah the school board decided on the absurd schedule in every class in the school)! That amounts for only 2 hours and 30 minutes per week! Minus a LOT of minutes on some interruptions, and the sacrifice of some classes due to formal assemblies, etc. In theory, I should have been done in max 2 weeks if it weren't for these interruptions.

And in your review, you gave me some advice. The first that, I guess, MUST remember, is the replay button. And 24 frames per second is the same for movies: I gotta remember that for my next project.

Anyways, thanks again for the review, that really helped me. I really appreciate it.

The marks of a true animator

This cartoon was really well done,
you seem to have the traits of a profesional animator.

You know how to play with timing, and you can fuse different mediums well (I think portions of this cartoon used some 3D program for the ships). You also know when to cheat (tweening instead of FBF animation).

I can't say anything too bad, except a menu with different options would have been nice, and extras would have been nicer...

Anyway keep up the good work, I'm sure you'll get an award for this.

Sincerely,
- Celx

UltraSheriff responds:

hey, and thanks for a very insightful review!
I was aiming to fuse different mediums, to boost my skills in afterfx and maya, wanted to push myself to make something in 3d, which i think is a powerful tool to know.
i have always felt that animation is to some extent about "cheating", saving time for those shots u really want to go to town with, and doing tweens and limited animation where you can.
as fo a menu, i quite agree, although im not sure what to put on it. i would say i like minimalism, but maybe im just lazy:)

Awful animation...

Awesome punchline!
You have an interesting style, and the music worked well.

My only complaints are, poor animation, & the preloader didn't work for me.
Anyway pretty cool short.

Sincerely,
- Celx
